Privacy Options

The Privacy Options screen is reached by clicking the Privacy Options button on various report and web page options screens in Legacy.

Privacy is of great concern when printing reports and books.  Legacy provides many options so that you can suppress and eliminate sensitive information, individuals, and marriages.  See Privacy Settings for more information.

Suppression of Living Individuals and Their Families
  • Exclude Living People Totally - Removes the person from the report all together.  They are treated as if they are not in your family file at all.  If you are doing an ancestor style report, any ancestors of the living person are also left out.  In like manner, any descendants of a living person are also excluded.  Non-direct-line spouses of a living person would not be included.
  • Suppress Details for Living People - Select this option to remove all details from living persons, except their name. This protects the privacy of living individuals who may not want personal information made public.
  • Change Name to "Living"- To provide complete anonymity, you can have the names changed to "Living" when suppressing the details of living people.
  • Change Name to "Living"- To provide complete anonymity, you can have the names changed to "Living" when suppressing the details of living people.
  • Suppress Details for Deceased Spouses of Living Individuals - This option removes the detail information from all dead spouses or partners of living individuals.  Only their names are shown.
  • Change Name to "Deceased"- To provide complete anonymity, you can have the names changed to "Deceased" when suppressing their details.

Note:  The suppression of details for a deceased spouse of a living individual is only done if ALL of the spouses of the deceased spouse are alive.  If a living person has a deceased spouse but the deceased spouse has previous or later spouse who is dead, the details will not be suppressed.
  • Suppress Details for Deceased Children of Living Individuals - This option removes the detail information from all dead children of living individuals.  Only their names are shown.
  • Change Name to "Deceased"- To provide complete anonymity, you can have the names changed to "Deceased" when suppressing their details.

Note:  The suppression of details for a deceased child of living parents is only done if BOTH of the parents of the deceased child are alive.  If either of the parents are dead, the details will not be suppressed.

  • Include Private Individuals - If you have marked one or more individuals in your family file as Private, they are included in the report but their detail information is suppressed and their names are shown only as "Private." If you would like to include their names and information, select this option.  See Information Screen.
  • Include Invisible Individuals - If you have marked one or more individuals in your family file as Invisible, they are excluded from reports by default.  It is as if they do not exist.  If you would like to include them, select this option.  See Information Screen.
  • Include Private Marriages - If you have set a marriage or partnership to Private, it is excluded from reports by default.  It is as if the marriage does not exist.  If you would like to include these marriages, select this option.  See Marriage Information.
  • Include Private Child-Parent Relationships - If you set the Child-Parent relationship between a child and a father or mother to Private, the relationship is excluded from reports by default.  It is as if it doesn't exist.  If you would like to include them, select this option.  See Editing Children.
  • Include [[ Private ]] text - Include any parts of notes and other fields that have been marked as private using the double opening [[ and closing ]] square brackets.  You also have the option to remove the double brackets.  See Notes.
  • Include Events Marked "Private" - Include individual events that are checkmarked Private.  See Add or Edit an Event.
  • Include Master Events Marked "Private" - Include all individual events based on master events that are checkmarked Private.  See Add or Edit Event Definition.

    Automatically Resetting Privacy Options
The default setting for printing Private information on reports is Off.  In other words, you have to specifically check the Include Private ... options to have private individuals and information included on a report.  If you would like to have your setting for printing Private information saved when you leave the report menu and restore then next time you open it, choose Retain the settings until changed during the current session.  If you want the printing of Private information turned back Off each time you exit the report menu, choose Reset to Off each time the report menu is opened.  (This is the safest setting to use as it is easy to forget that you had temporarily turned it On.)

Note: Each time you exit Legacy, the Privacy settings are set back to Off - even if you had selected the Retain the settings until changed option.
