Origins Report 

   The Origins report (which is only available in the Deluxe Edition of Legacy) is reached by choosing Other Reports > Origins Report from the Reports tab on the Ribbon bar.

It's nice to know where we came from - where our ancestors were born.  Most of us are a mixture of nationalities who have joined together and split apart for centuries.  Legacy can gather all the ancestral birth places in your family file and let you know what percentage of each nationality makes up your heritage.

Options
  • Report Title - Make any changes to the default report that you want to.
  • How Many Generations - Select the number of generation you want to go back.  One generation back would be your parents.  If you want to see your origins starting with your eight great-grandparents, set the number to 3.  If you want to include all your direct-line ancestors in your family file, set it to a number higher than the number of generations you have recorded - perhaps 999.  Legacy will stop when it gets to the oldest generation in each line and will let you know how far back it went.
  • Origin Scope 
     Include starting person and all ancestors -  Includes the starting person's birth location in the results.  The birth location isn't really part of the origins of your ancestors but it certainly will be for your children.  Looking back one generation - if your parents were born in Canada and France, and you were born in German, you are half Canadian and half French.  Your children, looking back two generations will be one third each of Canadian, French, and German...
     
     Include all ancestors (excluding starting person) -  This is the usual setting when gathering your ancestral origins.  The birthplace of the starting person is not taken into account.
     
     Include only the ancestors in the oldest generation -  This is an interest variation that shows your distant ancestral origins.  Setting the generations back quite a ways gives you a feel for where your older ancestors lived and perhaps what influence those origins had on your life.
  • Report Elements
    Include location percentage list
    This option includes a listing of the various birthplaces gathered from your ancestors arranged in descending percentage order.
    Include location bar chart
    This option mirrors the information shown in the percentage list but displays it as a horizontal bar chart giving a more visual representation of your birthplace origins.
    Include both
    Includes both the percentage list and the bar chart representations of your origins.
    Start the chart on a new page
    When including both the percentage list and bar chart, this option cause the bar chart to be place on the next page after the percentage list is complete.  When both elements will fit on one page, it is usually best to print them that way, thus saving paper.  However, when the percentage list or the bar chart takes more than one page each, starting the chart on its own page looks better.
  • For US Locations
    Stay at country level
    Legacy has the ability to breakdown US location by state. (More country breakdowns will be added in the future.)  If you would like to stay at the country level, select this option.
    Go down to the state level
    This option gathers locations down to the state level.
    Show US flag
    Shows the US flag icon for all US locations, even if collecting at the state level.  (The option to include flags is on the Format tab described below.)
    Show state flag
    If collecting location at the US state level, this option shows the state flags.

    Include a List of any Unrecognized Locations
    As Legacy is gathering birthplace information, it sometimes comes across locations that are not recognized as containing either a country name or US state name.  A list of these location can be included in the report for you to look at.  Oftentimes these are either a variant spelling of a country or are out and out misspelled names that will need to be corrected.  Legacy includes two files that contain recognized country and state names.  If you have a valid variation of a country name - perhaps the name of a country in a different language, or one that used to be spelled a different way, you can add that variation to the GeoCountryCodes.txt file.  You can use a text editor to add it to the correct country group in the file.

    Format
  • Name Format -  Select the format for the printing of the main name:
    Given name(s), Surname
    Surname, Given name(s)
  • Include RINS on names -  Includes the record identification numbers at the end of names.
  • Chart Borders
    Borders
    Includes a border around the bar chart (if included on the report).
    Shadow
    Includes a drop shadow on the border.
  • Chart Colors -  You can choose the color used for the follow chart elements:
    Chart Background Color
    Chart Text Color
    Chart Line Color
    Chart Bar Color
  • Include Flags on Bar Chart -  Includes small country or state flags to the left of each bar on the bar chart (if included on the report).

    Privacy
  • Include Private Individuals -  Includes individuals during the gathering process who are marked as Private.  Normally these people are skipped.
  • Include Invisible Individuals -  Includes individuals during the gathering process who are marked as Invisible.  Normally these people are skipped.

    Page Setup
    Lets you change the page margins, paper size, orientation and other page related settings.

    Fonts
    You can specify the fonts you want to use when printing the different sections of the report.  

    Reset
    You can click the Reset button to set all the report options back to their default values.  

    Where to Send the Report
    The report can be output to various formats.  Make your choice by clicking on the appropriate option button in the Report Destination box in the lower-right.  The choices are:
  • Screen / Printer -  Sends the report to either the Print Preview window or directly to your printer depending on whether you click the Preview or Print button. 
  • PDF File - Generates the report, displays it in the Print Preview window and then creates an Adobe PDF (Portable Document File) file.  This file can be viewed with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and easily sent to other people by e-mail.  (This feature is part of the Deluxe Edition only.)

    Printing
    When you have set all the options, click either the Preview button to see an on-screen view of the report before it is actually printed, or click Print to have the report sent directly to the printer. 

    Note:  The report settings for the Origins Report are saved in a file called Origins.usr in the [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr\ folder.
