Family Dictionary Report 

  To generate the Family Dictionary Report:
1. Choose Other Reports from the Report tab of the Ribbon bar and then choose Family Dictionary from the dropdown list.
2. Select the desired reports options (described below).
3. Click either Print or Preview to view the report.

The Family Dictionary is a list-type report of male names or female names that can be sorted by surname / given name.  If the case of females, the sorting is done by their maiden names.  The report can include parents of the main people, marriage information, and children's information.


Who to Print - Choose either to include only males, only females, or both males and females sort by their surnames and given names.

Fields to Include
Names of parents - includes the names of the parents, in parentheses, of the main indivduals.
Marriage date and place
List of children - includes the name of each child, and the date and place of their birth and death.
RIN numbers - adds the record identification number for each individual in the report after their names.
LDS Ordinance information - includes the date and temple of any ordinances that have been recorded.

Other Options
Include only individuals who are married - limits the list to only people who are linked to a spouse or partner.
Bold the names - prints the names of the individuals in a bold style so they are easily seen.
Blank line between individuals - Adds a blank line between individuals to that the break between people is easier to see.
Remove leading commas on locations - If any location have leading commas, they will be removed.

Report Language
You can choose from different languages when generating the Family Dictionary report.  To select a language, click the Report Language button and choose the language file to be used when generating the report.  There are many language files available.  To reset the language selection back to the default value, click the Reset button.

Note: All the program-produced titles and subtitles and labels and all the dates will be translated but items such as user-enter titles and location won't be translated.

Selecting the Records to Print
You can print the Family Dictionary report for the males or female in your entire family file, or you can filter the report down with the following options by clicking the Record Selection button at the bottom of the screen.  The options are:

All Families in the Entire Family File   This option includes every male or female in the entire Family File.
Everyone in the current Search List   This includes only the males or females on the current Search List. 
Focus Group Records   Includes males or females from your family file contained in the current focus group.  (See Focus Groups for detailed information on how to set up a focus group.)
All Individuals with a certain Tag Level   You select the tag level and then Legacy prints a group sheet for all families that have either the husband or the wife (or both) tag on that level.
All Individuals with Certain Hashtags   If you have assigned hashtags to groups of people in your family file, you can select one or more of them to filter the report to include just those who have those hashtags.  See Hashtags for more information on how to use this feature.

Report Title
Specifies the title to be printed at the top of each page of the report.

Font Size
Click the Change Fonts button to select a different font or font size for the report.  See Report Fonts for more information.

Page Setup
Click the Page Setup button to change page margins, print orientation, line spacing, paper size, border lines, heading and page numbering options, and footer options.  See Page Setup for more information.

Printer Setup
Lets you change the page size before generating the report.  You can also change the target printer and its specific settings.

Privacy Options
Privacy is of great concern when printing reports.  Legacy provides many options so that you can suppress and eliminate sensitive information, individuals, and marriages.  These include:

Suppression of Living Individuals and Their Families
  • Suppress Details for Living People 
  • Exclude Living People Totally 
  • Suppress Details for Deceased Spouses of Living Individuals 
  • Suppress Details for Deceased Children of Living Individuals 
    Override Privacy Settings
  • Include Private Individuals 
  • Include Invisible Individuals 
  • Include Private Marriages 
  • Include Private Child-Parent Relationships 
  • Include [[ Private ]] Notes 
  • Include Events Marked "Private
  • Include Master Events Marked "Private

    To open the Privacy Options screen, click the Privacy Options button along the right side of the screen. Also see Privacy Settings for more information about marking individuals and marriages as private.

    Save and Load
    You can save and reload any set of report settings using the Save and Load buttons.

    Where to Send the Report
    The report can be output to two formats.  Make your choice by clicking on the appropriate option button in the lower right.  The choices are:
  • Screen / Printer - Sends the report to either the Print Preview window or directly to your printer depending on whether you click the Preview or Print button.
  • PDF File - Generates the report, displays it in the Print Preview window and then creates an Adobe PDF (Portable Document File) file.  This file can be viewed with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and easily sent to other people by e-mail.  (This feature is part of the Deluxe Edition only.)

    When you have set all the options, click either the Preview button to see an on-screen view of the report before it is actually printed, or click Print to have the report sent directly to the printer.

    What are those curly braces?  {}
    If a birth date or location is enclosed in curly braces {  } it means that the date or location was missing for the birth so the entry for the christening was used instead.  The same applies for the death date and place.  

    Note:  The report settings for the Family Dictionary report are saved in a file called FamDict.usr in the [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr\ folder.
