Geo Location Database

To reach the Geo Location Database screen (which is only available in the Deluxe Edition of Legacy), click the Geo Location List icon on at the end of any location field, or choose Location Database from the Tools tab of the Ribbon bar on the main Legacy screen.

Legacy's Geo Location Database is a collection of nearly three million current locations worldwide divided into six regions:

PA - Pacific Islands
US - United States
AF - Africa
AM - Americas (non-USA)
AS - Asia
EU - Europe

Each location includes the name of the city, the county or province, the state, if any, and the country name.  Along with this information the latitude and longitude coordinates are also included.

It should be noted that the Geo Location Database does not contain historical location names as they have changed over time.  For example, there have been many country, state, county, and city boundary changes over the years.  These are not reflected in the database. You should not use the Geo Location Database to change or verify locations you find in historical documents.  It is only a snapshot of the current settings of borders and jurisdictions.

The Geo Location Database is available on CD-ROM and can either be accessed from the CD or copied to your hard drive during installation of Legacy if you have the necessary 400 megabytes of free space.   Needless to say, access time is much quicker when the database is on your hard drive but is very acceptable from a CD-ROM drive.

Downloading and Installing from the Internet
To download the Geo Location Database from the Internet:
1.  In your browser, go to: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/geodbdownload.asp
2.  Click on the Geo Database Installer link to download the installer program.  It is easiest if you save the installer to your Desktop so that it is easy to find and can be deleted after the installation is complete.  The installer is about 67 MB in size.
3.  When the installer is downloaded (it is called LegacyGeoDBSetup.exe), double-click on it to get it started.
4.  If you are presented with a Security Warning asking you if you want to run this file, click the Run button.
5.  When the installer begins, you may be asked to select the language you want to use during the installation.  Highlight your choice and click OK.
6.  When the Welcome screen appears, click Next >.
7.  The next window to appear is the Destination Location screen.  By default, Legacy will install the Geo Location Database in C:\ProgramData\Legacy Family Tree\GeoDB folder.  We recommend that you accept this default.  If you want to install it in a different location (which might be the case if you have more room on a different drive), click the Browse... button to change the installation location.
8.  Click Next.  An information screen appears reminding you that the file is very large (234 MB).
9.  When you are ready to start the install, click the Yes button.  A progress bar will estimate how the extraction is proceeding.  When it is done, the GeoDB.gdb file will be in the selected folder and the Geo Location Database will be ready to use in Legacy.

Note: The first time you access the Geo Location Database in Legacy after installing it, Legacy will pop up a small dialog box indicating that the indexes are being rebuilt.  This is only done once and doesn't take too much time.  During the index rebuilding process, the database file will grow from 234 MB to its final size of about 402 MB.

As indicated at the top of this help topic, the Geo Location Database can be access two different ways.
