The Forms Center is reached by clicking the Forms Center button on the Reports tab of the Ribbon bar.
The Forms Center is the central repository for the many blank forms that are available in Legacy. These include a multitude of census forms, relationship diagrams, research forms, and more. As new forms are created, they are automatically added to the Forms Center the next time you update Legacy.
The Forms List
The list of available forms is built from the names of the form files in the Forms folder.
When the list is first displayed, it is in a compressed format showing only the top-level categories. For example:
This example shows three groups of forms, Census, Relationship Chart, and Research.
Expanding and Contracting Sections
To expand a group, click the plus sign to the left of it (or press the plus key on your keyboard when the line is highlighted). The sub-categories are then shown. For example, if you click the plus sign to the left of Census, you will see:
This shows that there are several types of Census forms available. If a sub-category has a plus sign to the left of it then an additional level of choices can be opened up by click it. In the example above, Britain does not have a plus sign but Canada does. Therefore, Britain has only one Census form available and Canada has more than one. Clicking the plus sign next to Canada opens up the list to show the two available forms:
Any available individual form is shown without a plus sign or minus sign next to it. In the example above, Britain is a form and 1851 and 1901 are Canadian census forms.
To contract a section of the list, click the minus sign to the left of the section (or press the minus key on your keyboard when the line is highlighted). To quickly expand all the sections in the list, click the Expand All Sections button. To contract all section down to just the main groups, click Contract All Sections.
Selecting a Form to Print
To select a specific form to print, click the form name to highlight it and then click the Preview or Print button to produce the form.
Selecting Groups of Forms to Print
You can also print groups of forms. In the example above, Canada consists of a group of two forms, 1851 and 1901. To print both of these forms together, click Canada to highlight it (as shown in the example). Clicking Preview or Print will generate both forms on two different pages. If you were to click US Federal, all the US Federal census forms would be printed as a group.
If you click another level up, for example the Census line,
all the groups of forms below it will be printed. In the example above, this would include all the British, Canadian, Danish, Irish, and US Federal and State census forms.
Selecting Multiple Forms to Print
You can also select random (non-consecutive) individual forms or groups of forms to print. To do this you must first select the Select Multiple Forms option. When you do, empty checkboxes are added to each line in the list:
You can then select the specific forms you want to print:
In the above case the US Federal census forms for 1790, 1820 and 1860 will be printed.
If you select a higher level group by placing a checkmark in its checkbox, the entire group below it will be printed.
In the above example, all of the US Federal census forms will be printed even though there are some specific forms left unchecked within the group.
Checking a main group, like Census, will cause all the forms within that group to be printed.
In the example above, all the census forms for all the countries will be printed whether checked or not - because the main Census group line has been selected.
Changing to a Different Forms Folder
Again, by default, Legacy installs all the form files into the Legacy\Forms folder. Any additional forms that you download from the Legacy web site would normally be placed in this folder as well.
If you find that you eventually have more form files than can easily managed from one folder, you can split them into multiple folders. For example, you might create three folders under the Forms folder called Census, Relationship Charts, and Research and then move the appropriate form files into these subfolders.
To change to a different folder, click the Browse… button and select the desired folder. The Form Center will read the list of form files and create a new, smaller list for you. The current folder is always displayed at the bottom of the window.
The Page Setup screen allows you to change margins, paper orientation, paper size, borders, headers, page numbering and footers. (See Page Setup for more information.)
You can specify the font name, size, and style to be used in each section of the chart. See Report Fonts for more information.
When you have set all the options for the relationship chart printout, click either Preview to see an on-screen view of the chart before actually printing, or click Print to have the chart sent directly to the printer.
Where to Send the Report
The report can be output to two formats. Make your choice by clicking on the appropriate option button in the lower right. The choices are:
Screen / Printer - Sends the report to either the Print Preview window or directly to your printer depending on whether you click the Preview or Print button.
PDF File - Generates the report, displays it in the Print Preview window and then creates an Adobe PDF (Portable Document File) file. This file can be viewed with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and easily sent to other people by e-mail. (This feature is part of the Deluxe Edition only.)
When you have set all the options, click either the Preview button to see an on-screen view of the report before it is actually printed, or click Print to have the report sent directly to the printer.
Note: The settings for the Forms Center screen are saved in a file called Forms.usr in the [My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr\ folder.
