Descendant Chart

A Descendant Chart shows an individual and all his or her descendants.

To print a Descendant report:
1. Choose Chart Reports > Descendant Chart from the Reports tab on the Ribbon bar
2. Set the options, as described below.
3. Click either Print or Preview to view the report.

Options

Title
The default title is Descendants of [Fullname].  [Fullname] is replaced by the starting person's name.  If you would like something different, you can edit the title. You can embed replaceable fields within the title text.  For example, "Report for [name]".  The [name] field will be replaced with the person's name when the report is generated.  See Report Title Options for a complete list of fields available.

Number of Generations
Set the number of generations to include in the Descendant report by using the up and down arrows on the spin control.  (or click one of the quick-set buttons to jump to 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50, 75 or 250 generations.)

Indenting Each Generation
Each younger generation of the Descendant report is indented to make the chart easy to read and understand.  You can set the distance that each generation is indented

Individual Dates and Locations
Selecting one of the variations of this option results in the inclusion of the requested information following each individual's name.  You can also choose to have christening or burial dates used if birth or death dates are missing.

Numbering Generations
Select the type of numbering system you would like to use.
None  No numbers are used to precede each name.
Generation Level Numbers  Numbers each person with their generation number, beginning with generation 1.
Henry Numbers  Numbers each individual with a Henry number.  (See Henry Numbering System for more information.)
d'Aboville Numbers  Numbers each individual with a d'Aboville number.  (See d'Aboville Numbering System for more information.)
de Villiers/Pama Numbers  Numbers each individual with a de Villiers/Pama number.  (See de Villiers/Pama Numbering System for more information.

Report Options

For a complete list and explanation of all the report options available for this report, including items to include on the report, formatting options, pictures, page setup, headers, footers and font selection, click here.

Report Language
You can choose from different languages when generating the Descendant report.  To select a language, click the Report Language button and choose the language file to be used when generating the report.  There are many language files available.  To reset the language selection back to the default value, click the Reset button.

Note: All the program-produced titles and subtitles and labels and all the dates will be translated but items such as user-enter titles and location won't be translated.

Color Text and Boxes
When printing reports that include boxed information, you can select from four different coloring styles (or none at all).  See Custom Box Colors for more information.

Index Generation
By selecting the checkbox in the upper-left corner of the Index Options button, you can have Legacy generate an alphabetical index for the report and an optional Location index.  This is particularly useful when you are printing a large number of consecutively numbered reports.  The index includes each person who is shown on each page and what position they occupy on that page.  The index can be lined or unlined and printed in one, two or three columns.  Click the Index Options button to make changes in the index format.  (See Index Options for more information.)

Where to Send the Report
Descendant Charts can be output to various formats.  Make your choice by clicking on the appropriate option button in the lower right corner of the Report Menu window.  The choices are:

Screen / Printer  Sends the report to either the Print Preview window or directly to your printer depending on whether you click the Preview or Print button.  (See Printing below.)

HTML File  Sends the report to a HTML file that can be used on a web site or sent as an e-mail message. You will be prompted for a drive and folder.

PDF File - Generates the report, displays it in the Print Preview window and then creates an Adobe PDF (Portable Document File) file.  This file can be viewed with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader and easily sent to other people by e-mail.  (This feature is part of the Deluxe Edition only.)

Text File  Sends the report to a text file on either your hard drive or a floppy disk.  You will be prompted for a drive and folder.

Windows Clipboard  Creates the report in a text file format and then places the text on the Windows Clipboard.  You can then paste the report into other documents, emails, comments, etc.

For more information on the output options, see Report Output Formats.

Printing
When you have set all the options, click either the Preview button to see an on-screen view of the report before it is actually printed, or click Print to have the report sent directly to the printer.
