Customize - Data Defaults

The Data Defaults settings are reached by choosing Customize from the Options tab on the Ribbon bar and then clicking on the Data Defaults option on the menu panel.   (See Customize Options for a summary of the customization options.)

4.1 Living Indicator Default
Choose the default setting of the Living indicator when adding new individuals.  Use Previous retains the setting from the previously added individual.  This is handy when adding a large group of people that all have the same setting.

4.2 Default Note Type
When you open the Notes window, you can either open the last note type used (General, Research, or Medical) or to always go back to the General Notes tab.

4.3 Cursor Position When Viewing Notes
When a note field is displayed you can choose to have the input cursor placed at the beginning or end of the existing notes.  If it is placed at the end, the note contents may be scrolled down so that the end of the notes are visible in the box.

4.4 When Adding New Records
When records are deleted from a family file, it leaves a "hole" in the sequential list of record numbers used by the individuals and marriages.  These most often occur as you merge duplicate records together.  You can have these abandoned numbers reused as you add new records (or import them) by checking the Reuse abandoned RINs option.

4.5 Default Directions for Latitude and Longitude
Latitude, which gives the location of a place north or south of the equator, is expressed by angular measurements ranging from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. Longitude, the location of a place east or west of a north-south line called the prime meridian, is measured in angles ranging from 0° at the prime meridian to 180° at the International Date Line.  If most of your family file locations are found in the western and northern hemispheres, you can set the defaults to N and W for latitude and longitude.  If your family comes from a different locale on earth, you can select the appropriate directions for defaults.

Latitude and Longitude can be recorded in Legacy attached to master locations, addresses, and repositories.  (See Adding or Editing Master Locations or Adding or Editing Addresses.)

Setting these default values simply pre-fills the latitude and longitude direction boxes with the default values.  If you have N and W selected, these are what will show when you first display the Address form or the Distance and Bearing Calculator.  If you need to enter S or E values, you can change them by clicking the up/down arrows next to the letter.

4.6 Quick Entry Character Ribbon
When entering information about families, Legacy offers a feature to help you quickly enter international characters.  You can choose up to eight letters to be displayed in a ribbon on input screens.  Whenever you need one of these letters, simply clicking on one automatically fills it in where you are typing.  To select the characters for the ribbon, click the Change button and then double-click on up to eight characters.

4.7 Units of Measurement
Choose which measurement system you would like to use in Legacy.  This can be either inches or metric.

4.8 Time Format
Choose between 12-hour and 24-hour time displays.
